Kita voucher for family day care: how it works

The Kita voucher confirms for how many hours of care your child can take up a place. It applies in a Kita just as in family day care.

In Berlin, childcare is free of charge for all children. For lunch, parents pay a catering contribution of 23 euros a month. With a valid berlinpass-BuT it does not apply.

Who gets the voucher

  • From the first birthday children are entitled to up to seven hours of care a day. Need is not checked for this.
  • Before the first birthday and for more than seven hours a day you must prove your need, for example with a certificate from your employer, from training or studies, or proof of your self-employment.

The following also applies: you live in Berlin, you have custody and all legal guardians agree to the application. The child must be at least eight weeks old.

When to apply

There is a time window. Do not apply too late, because according to the Service-Portal Berlin processing takes six to eight weeks on average.

  1. 9 months before

    At the earliest

From now on you can submit the application to the youth welfare office.

  2. 2 months before

    At the latest

By this date the application must have reached the youth welfare office.

  3. Start of care

    Off we go

Care starts with the voucher and the care contract.

Where and how to apply

You submit the application to the youth welfare office of your district of residence, not to the district where the family day care is located.

Typical documents are the application with the signatures of all legal guardians, proof of sole custody if applicable and, if necessary, the certificate of your need (see above). Which proofs apply to you is stated on the Service-Portal page.
